Normally, the upper chambers (atria) of your heart pump blood to the lower chambers (ventricles) of your heart. This means that your heart contracts and relaxes to a regular beat. In atrial fibrillation (AF), the heart is quivering and can’t move the blood effectively and this can lead to blood clots, strokes, heart failure, or other heart-related complications. Between 15 – 20 percent of people who have strokes have AF.
Some people have a fluttering feeling in their chest and some people have NO symptoms at all.
This is a very serious condition in people over the age of 65 and many patients are unaware that AF is a serious condition. This untreated condition doubles the risk of heart-related deaths and causes a 4 – 5 fold increase risk for stroke.
If you or someone you love has atrial fibrillation, educate yourself what AF is, why treatment can save lives, and what you can do to reach your goals, lower your risks and live a healthy life.
